Three Main Types of Spinal Cord Stimulators

The following are three types of spinal cord simulators:

1. Conventional implantable pulse generator

A battery-operated version of a spinal cord stimulator, the conventional implantable pulse generator (IPG), involves implanting a battery into the spine to provide electricity. This battery provides the energy necessary for managing pain in one area of the body, but it does require replacing every two to five years. When replacing the battery, surgery is required.

2. Rechargeable implant pulse generator

This spinal cord stimulator also relies on battery power to provide electricity strong enough to stimulate the spine and alleviate pain. However, the battery used in this version is rechargeable and is capable of producing enough power to stimulate more than one area along the spine. Rechargeable batteries do not require replacement as often as IPG systems, but the entire stimulator still dies out after about 10 years.

3. Radiofrequency stimulator

An older design, radiofrequency stimulators use a battery outside the body to power the spinal cord stimulator system. Today, the technology has been replaced with rechargeable IPGs or conventional IPGs, so it is rarely used. It can produce a large amount of power when it is used, though, so it can stimulate multiple areas at once.
